In brief
  • No clean update or indie program reported at Sephora, Ulta, Credo or Target in window
  • Sephora Accelerate 2026 applications ran March 2 to March 31 for early prestige brands
  • 41 brands have graduated Accelerate, with more than half launching at Sephora

For a shopper who reads ingredient lists, little at the shelf changed this summer. No new clean standard update, accelerator cohort or indie program at Sephora, Ulta, Credo or Target was reported inside July 8 to October 3, 2026. The most recent relevant retail move remains Sephora opening applications for its 2026 Accelerate Program on March 2, 2026.

That timing matters because Accelerate is often where small, plant-led skincare first learns to survive in prestige retail. Sephora describes it as a United States led brand incubation program for prestige beauty brands in early stages and not yet widely distributed. Applications for the 2026 round closed March 31. Finalists were expected to be announced in summer, and no dated announcement has been shared. Eligible applicants must be at least 18 and have a North American incorporated company.

The record to date is concrete. To date 41 brands across makeup, skincare, hair care and fragrance have graduated from Sephora Accelerate. Sephora said more than half of Accelerate graduates have launched with Sephora so far. For botanical founders, that path from greenhouse idea to all-door distribution is the slow work Rooting Moss follows closely. Soil and sourcing choices made early tend to hold, or fail, under retail scale.

Recent graduates show how that growth looks. EADEM expanded to all Sephora stores and its Le Chouchou lip balm broke into Sephora top 10 lip moisturizers for 2025. Kulfi is described as now an all-door brand with a top 3 lip stain. Topicals, an alumni of the 2021 Accelerate cohort, had one of Sephora best-selling eye masks last year. The 7 Virtues joined Accelerate and later launched with Sephora in 2018. The 2026 Sephora Beauty Grant winner is MAED, according to the Sephora newsroom post.

Since its start a decade ago as the first prestige retail incubator for female founders, the Sephora Accelerate Program has helped bring forward new and often underrepresented perspectives and voices in the beauty industry. That statement came from the Sephora Newsroom.

The wider clean landscape also stayed steady in the window. Ulta Beauty says every brand certified as having Clean Ingredients complies with its Made Without List covering substances like parabens and phthalates. Ulta Conscious Beauty includes five standards listed as Clean Ingredients, Vegan, Cruelty Free, Sustainable Packaging and Positive Impact. The Credo Clean Standard requires brands to screen against a 2,700-item dirty list from aluminum to talc.

What to watch next is selection rather than standards. Who was selected for the 2026 Sephora Accelerate cohort, and whether indie skincare brands were included, was not stated. The joint Know Better, Do Better ingredient report, which combed through 318,000 ingredient listings in more than 8,500 products, was released Oct 22 without a year given, so it cannot be placed in the summer window.

For now, the ritual stays the same: steep, read, choose with care, and wait to see which young brands take root.
