Thirty years after a treatment room outside Boston, Renée Rouleau works in Austin with eighteen people, nine skin types and a belief that results start with knowing what the skin in front of you really needs. We talk fruit acids, elderberry calm and slow growth.
The address tells part of the story. Renée Rouleau Skin Care now works from 2120 West Braker Lane, Suite F, in Austin, Texas, with a small team of eighteen to nineteen people, after earlier chapters outside Boston and then in Dallas. It is a working place more than a showcase, a treatment room and a lab relationship and a blog desk, kept close together on purpose.
Rouleau attended esthetics school more than thirty years ago and opened her first spa at twenty one with a mentor, sold it after five years and moved to Texas to start again. The line grew from what she saw on real faces. Skin did not fit dry, normal and oily, so she mapped nine types and built a quiz to match routine to type.
What we noticed, reading and listening across interviews and product pages, is how botanical her problem solving is. Fruit powers the peel that brings the post facial glow home. Elderberry steadies the toner for redness and sensitivity. Acids clear the pore, plants comfort the barrier, and the ritual holds both. This conversation stays with those choices.
You opened your first skincare spa outside Boston at twenty one, after a coworker and mentor asked you to open a business together, then sold it after five years and moved to Texas to begin again, what did those early treatment room years teach you about skin that still shapes the brand today?
I started with a treatment room, hands on skin, learning face by face. That will always be my foundation. When you see skin up close, day after day, you learn that labels like dry or oily tell you almost nothing. Pores behave one way on the forehead and another on the cheeks. Sensitivity moves with seasons and stress. Breakouts have stages. I kept asking, what does this skin really need, right now.
Thirty years ago, I started this business with a treatment room, a belief that understanding your skin type could change everything, and a willingness to keep learning. I am constantly moving and trying everything. Being very solution oriented is what makes me unique. I am here to serve them, and I have always looked at it that way. I really love what I do and I think I love what I do now more than ever. I can not ever see myself not doing it.
Your nine skin types and the Skin Type Quiz grew from the idea that one size does not fit all, and you ask, if you do not know your skin type, are you even getting results, how does that system change the way someone chooses a cleanser or a peel?
It changes everything, because it slows the choice down. Instead of buying for a concern alone, you buy for a type with a concern. An adult with clogged pores and sensitivity needs a different strength and rhythm than a teenager with the same clogged pores. The quiz sorts that. It asks about oil, breakouts, redness, discoloration, dryness, and then it places you in one of nine types.
If you do not know your skin type, are you even getting results. That question sounds direct, but it is practical. A peel used too often on a reactive type will keep redness going. A cleanser that strips will make oil rebound. When the type is clear, we can set the routine. Cleanse the right way, exfoliate at the right pace, hydrate in the right weight. The Renee Way is personalization, not more products.

Anti Bump Solution was the product that started it all and thirty years later is still your number one best seller with more than 250,000 users, what problem were you trying to solve in the treatment room when you first made it?
Clients would come in with those deep, painful underground bumps that never come to a head. They hurt, they linger, and picking only makes them worse. In the treatment room I could calm the area, keep the skin clean, and support healing without tearing at it. I wanted something they could take home and dab on at the first throb.
That is how Anti Bump Solution began. It is still our number one best seller, which tells me the problem never went away. Dab it directly on the spot to calm the look of swelling fast. Keep fingers off. Keep the rest of the routine gentle. It fits how I work. Solve the immediate worry, then steady the whole face so fewer bumps form.
Your best selling AHA BHA Blemish Control Cleanser won an Allure Best of Beauty award and pairs alpha and beta hydroxy acids in a daily wash for bumps, blackheads and discoloration, why put exfoliating acids in a cleanser rather than leaving them only in serums and peels?
Because the cleanse sets the field. If oil and buildup stay in the pore lining, everything layered after has to work harder. A small, daily dose of AHAs and BHAs loosens dead cells as you wash, so pores look clearer and tone looks more even over time. It is steady work rather than a strong weekly event.
That cleanser became our best selling cleanser and our first beauty award winner. Use it as a daily cleanser to wash away oil and buildup while it exfoliates. Keep the water lukewarm, massage for about a minute, rinse well. For many of our nine types, especially those prone to bumps and blackheads, that nightly reset keeps the rest of the routine simple.
Triple Berry Smoothing Peel was created to bring that exfoliated post facial glow into the home, with fruit to smooth, resurface and brighten, how should someone use it so the harvest works without overdoing it?
I made it for that Monday after a facial feeling, when skin looks smooth and light moves across it. Fruit brings natural acids and a sensory cue that this is a treatment, not a daily cream. It smells berry good, which makes people slow down. At home, that pause matters. You apply a thin layer to clean skin, leave it for the time on the label, rinse well, then hydrate.
For most types, once a week is enough. If your type runs sensitive or dry, use less often and watch how skin responds the next morning. Do not layer strong exfoliating serums the same night. In the morning, use your sunscreen. A peel is like steeping. You want full flavor, then you strain. Brightness should come with comfort, never with tightness that lasts.

Elderberry Soothing Toner delivers antioxidants and hydration to improve the appearance of redness and sensitivity, what drew you to elderberry for this step, and where does a toner sit in the ritual?
Toner is the drink after the wash. After cleansing, skin wants water and calm before serum. Elderberry made sense because it brings antioxidants and hydration in a light layer that sensitive types can take. It helps the appearance of redness while skin is still damp, so what follows spreads well and feels comfortable.
I formulate with chemists, but I start from the skin type and the concern. What does this skin really need. For redness prone types, it needs less friction and more steady moisture. Press the toner in with palms, no tugging with cotton. Then apply serum while skin is still supple. Roots hold soil after rain. Think of toner that way. It settles the field so the next step can root.
The BHA Clarifying Serum is a leave on exfoliating serum to clear clogged pores and fade the look of discoloration, when you choose between that nightly serum and the weekly berry peel, what guides you?
Pace and place. A peel is a field clearing. It resurfaces the surface so texture looks smooth and light reflects. A BHA serum is row work. It stays on and keeps the pore lining clear day by day, which helps with ongoing blackheads and the marks breakouts leave behind.
I ask what the type shows. If texture is rough and glow fades by midweek, the peel may help. If pores clog in the same zones and spots leave shadows, the leave on serum may help more. Some types use both, on different nights, with rest nights between. Start slowly, one new exfoliant at a time. If skin feels tender, pause. The goal is clear pores with a calm barrier, not constant activity.

You stayed one hundred percent founder owned in Austin with a team of eighteen to nineteen people, say no to about ninety four percent of opportunities, and write that you do not chase trends or viral moments, what has that restraint allowed in how you formulate and source?
It lets me stay close to the work. I never want to sell my soul for the almighty dollar. I would rather stay small and be a damn good brand than grow fast and lose the thread. We do not chase trends or viral moments. That sounds simple. In practice it means saying no a lot, to about ninety four percent of what comes in, so the few yeses get full care.
Formulating takes time. You choose the skin type, you define what results should look like, you test textures, you adjust. With fruit acids you watch strength and pH. With soothing plants you watch sourcing and stability. With everything you watch how it layers. Our growth came from gifting to friends and family, then from a blog that answered real questions and found readers through search. Slow roots hold.
Your blog became your number one marketing strategy through organic search, and you were noted as the first esthetician based company to offer virtual skin consultations, how does teaching in plain language connect to the plants and acids in the bottles?
Teaching is the other half of the formula. A bottle can only do what the hands do with it. If someone uses too much, too often, even good ingredients disappoint. So I write the way I talk in the treatment room. How to cleanse. How long to leave a masque. How to tell the difference between dryness and dehydration.
Being virtual let us see skin in home light and hear about routines as lived. Then we can point to the right texture and the right timing. Acids to keep the pore clear. Elderberry and light moisture to keep the look calm. Niacinamide and restorative oils in our Moisture Infusion Toner to jump start the look of barrier repair. Plants matter because of what they do in that sequence. Education keeps the ritual honest.
Closing note from the desk
What stays with us is the steadiness of the method. Type first, concern second, ritual third. Rouleau has kept the same questions for thirty years and let the answers shape small, useful formulas rather than a wide shelf.
She set out to give adult breakouts and sensitive skin a calmer path to clear, with fruit when texture needs lifting and elderberry when redness needs settling, matched to nine types so fewer people have to guess. That is plain work, done in Austin, and it reads clearly on the skin.
