It started with two friends. Said plainly on the about page, it reveals how Eadem works, two voices checking each other, two skin histories informing one formula, and a pace that feels more like tending than launching.
It started with two friends. That is the line on the Eadem about page, and it keeps returning while you read the rest of the story.
Marie Kouadio Amouzame and Alice Lin Glover met at Google and bonded over immigrant parents, Ivory Coast and Taiwan, and a shared frustration with post-inflammatory hyperpigmentation. The brand began in 2018 as a lifestyle blog for women of colour, then became a skincare line with its first product on May 20, 2021. That slow steep matters here.
What they make now is a small, considered routine built for melanin-rich skin. The promise is stated carefully. Fade the look of dark spots without lightening natural skin color. No bleaching agents, no hydroquinone, fragrance free, vegan, cruelty free, non clogging. The language they return to is brighter not lighter.
What others miss is the sourcing discipline behind the calm. Milk Marvel was built over 25 iterations with a woman of colour formulator and a dermatologist. Development takes about two years, more or less. They make formulas from scratch rather than buying from a catalog. In a category that moves fast, that choice reads as root work.
You built Milk Marvel over 25 iterations with a woman of colour formulator and dermatologist Dr. Ann Brewer, after starting Eadem as a blog in 2018 and launching the serum on May 20, 2021. What did those early conversations teach you about post-inflammatory hyperpigmentation that a brief could not?
We knew we were onto something early on when we spoke with countless women of colour and all of them were saying the same thing. Looking at the landscape, it felt like no one was addressing it, or talking to us, which was kind of crazy. It started with two friends, yes, but it grew because the need was shared.
For me, for years I used ingredients like hydroquinone to address my hyperpigmentation without knowing the harmful side effects. I thought strong had to mean harsh. Many of us were shown studies of older white users with age spots and told to translate that to our own faces. When we say melanin-rich it is not about the colour of the skin necessarily. It is more about how the skin behaves. It marks, it holds the mark, it needs time to release it.
So we built for PIH first. We asked what a mark needs to fade safely. Gentle resurfacing, steady brightening, barrier support. We tested on a custom panel because we wanted proof on the skin we serve. It is about finding commonalities in the experiences and skin needs of women of color, and then formulating with care.

Your about page carries two taglines, Science Meets Soul and More Than One Thing Can Be True, with three pillars listed as Proof, Formula, Experience. How do those words shape a decision in the lab when a plant extract and a lab made active could both do the job?
We question everything. That is on the page for a reason. Science Meets Soul is not a slogan to us. It is a method. Proof means we test on the people we make for. Formula means we start from scratch. Experience means the texture, the scent, the way it layers, all of it has to feel respectful.
More Than One Thing Can Be True means a plant extract and a lab made active can sit in the same bottle if each earns its place. Niacinamide supports the look of even tone and helps skin hold moisture. Encapsulated vitamin C, 3-O-ethyl ascorbic acid, offers antioxidant support with better steadiness in formula than some forms of pure ascorbic acid. Then we look to plants for what they do best. Licorice root for the appearance of brightness. Papain from papaya and bromelain from pineapple to help soften the look of rough buildup so skin looks smoother.
We do not choose a plant because it is a plant. We choose it because of what it does in the blend, at a level skin can live with morning and night.
Milk Marvel is described as weightless and milky, 30 mL for 68 dollars, with 3 to 4 drops applied to damp skin morning and night followed by moisturiser and SPF. Why that milky texture and that damp skin step, and what should the first two weeks feel like?
Texture is part of the formula, not decoration. We wanted something that spreads easily, layers without pilling, and leaves a soft glow rather than a film. Milky lets us suspend both water loving and oil loving ingredients so they apply evenly. On damp skin, those 3 to 4 drops move further and settle more comfortably. Then moisturiser, then SPF in the morning.
In our independent research we saw visible fading at 14 and 28 days, and 95.2 percent of 50 women with darker skin tones said they would recommend it. That does not mean marks vanish in two weeks. It means skin can start to look clearer, more even, more rested. Papain and bromelain help refine the look of texture. Niacinamide and vitamin C derivative support radiance over time. Use it twice a day, gently, and let the routine do the work. If skin feels tight, you used too much or skipped moisturiser. Three drops is enough for most faces.
You talk about amber algae, listed as plankton extract, with the line that it is able to detect excess melanin in production, and only cut that. What does that idea mean in practice for someone who fears lightening?
Because women of colour have historically been an afterthought in beauty, we have had to completely break from the norm. That history is why the fear of lightening is real. Many brightening products were built around bleaching agents. We pledged no hydroquinone, no bleaching agents. Our bundle is called Brighter Not Lighter for a reason.
The amber algae is able to detect excess melanin in production, and only cut that. That is how Alice has described the intent. In practice, think of it as targeting the look of excess. The formula is meant to fade the appearance of dark spots and post-acne marks while leaving surrounding skin looking like itself. Honokiol and magnolol, the two main compounds in magnolia bark extract that we group under our Smart Melanin Technology term, bring antioxidant and soothing support. Licorice supports the look of brightness. It is a chorus, not a bleach.
We are not trying to change natural skin color. We are trying to help a mark rejoin the field.

Cloud Cushion followed in February 2022 and the pages show a price conflict, 48 dollars on one list and 58 dollars in the title, with plant ceramides, tucuma extract, snow mushroom, tetrapeptide-30 and niacinamide. What job did you want a moisturiser to do after an active serum?
After Milk Marvel, skin needed a cushion, literally. Cloud Cushion is a 50 mL moisturiser meant to soothe, hydrate deeply, and leave skin looking plump and dewy. The serum does the refining and brightening work. The cream holds the harvest in.
Plant ceramides help support the moisture barrier so skin looks comfortable rather than stripped. Tucuma extract, from a palm fruit, brings emollient softness. Snow mushroom holds water and gives that bouncy slip without heaviness. Tetrapeptide-30 and niacinamide support the look of even tone. It is plush to the touch and meant to layer cleanly over 3 to 4 drops of serum.
We like to say routines should feel like care, not correction. Serum, then a soft seal, then SPF by day. If your barrier is happy, the appearance of tone improves too, because light reflects better off calm, hydrated skin.
Mami Wata is listed at 100 mL for 44 dollars with cica, ectoin and panthenol, to be used through the day even over makeup. Where does a mist sit in a routine for stressed, sensitive skin?
Mami Wata is our rescue mist, named for the water spirit, and built for sensitive, stressed days. Cica supports the look of calm. Ectoin helps skin appear hydrated under dry air or office heat. Panthenol supports softness. It is barrier first support in a spray.
Use it on clean skin before serum when skin feels tight, or over makeup in the afternoon when the field feels dry. Hold it a hand width away, mist lightly, let it settle, then press. It does not replace moisturiser. It refreshes the layer between steps. For skin that flushes easily or feels prickly after cleansing, that midday pause can change how the rest of the routine sits. Keep the full size at home and the mini in the bag. Small, steady watering beats flooding.

You have said development takes about two years, more or less, and that you make formulas from scratch rather than buying them from a catalog and changing a few things. What is harder about that path, from soil to stability?
We make our formulas from scratch rather than buying them from a catalog and changing a few things. That means we choose each extract, each level, each pH and texture target. A catalog base is faster. From scratch takes about two years, more or less, because plants vary by harvest and actives interact.
Licorice root behaves differently by source and cut. Enzymes like papain and bromelain need care to stay kind. Encapsulated vitamin C needs protection from light and air. Milky emulsions need time to prove they will not split. We build over many iterations, Milk Marvel took 25, because small shifts change spread, glow and comfort.
Made in an FDA approved facility, as reported, gives structure, but the discipline is ours. We keep notes, we retest, we adjust. Tinkering over ad spend, always. It is slower. The result sits better on melanin-rich skin because it was grown for it.
Labs first quoted 20,000 dollars more to test on diverse skin tones, and you chose a custom panel instead. What did that panel change about Milk Marvel?
I would say that 99 percent of people do not reply to your emails unless you know someone. Labs were no different. When we asked for diverse panels, we were told it would cost 20,000 dollars more. That tells you what the norm was. We had no traditional VC funding, so it is really been about tinkering and finding out what works, versus throwing a million dollars into ads and seeing what happens.
The custom panel changed everything. Women with darker skin tones used the serum as directed, 3 to 4 drops on damp skin, morning and night, then moisturiser and SPF. They told us about slip, sting, glow, makeup grip. They told us when a mark looked softer at day 14 and more even at day 28. That is how we landed texture and dose. Proof, to us, means tested where it will live. The Sephora Accelerate guidance on retailing, fulfilment, inventory and finance, and the 30,000 dollar Glossier Grant for branding and imagery, helped us carry that proof to shelf, first online in September 2021, then to 261 stores by March 2023.
Eadem is Latin for the same or all, and your geography spans Cote d’Ivoire, France, Montreal, Beijing, New York, California, Tokyo and London. How does that shared root show up now across The Mark, Cashmere Peel and Sunsuede?
Eadem means the same, or all. We liked that both senses could be true. Same care, for all of us who mark. Same standards, across each formula.
The Mark, at 38 dollars, is our targeted dark spot concentrate with a gel patch texture that stays put. Where Milk Marvel is for across the face, The Mark anchors high potency actives exactly where the spot sits. Cashmere Peel, full size 42 dollars and mini 20 dollars, is our milky exfoliant with FastFade support to help unclog the look of pores and refine texture in one sweep. Sunsuede, at 32 dollars, is our suede finish balm stick SPF made in Korea that protects and primes in a single swipe.
Different steps, same root. No bleaching agents. Fragrance free where stated. Tested with our community in mind. Brighter, not lighter, from field to finish.
Closing note from the desk
What stays with us is the steadiness of the method. Two founders, two histories, one patient routine. They chose from scratch blends over catalog speed, custom panels over standard testing, and tinkering over large ad spend. The botanicals are chosen for function, licorice for the look of brightness, enzymes for soft refinement, algae and bark compounds for targeted support.
Eadem set out to serve melanin-rich skin with honesty about marks. Fade the spot, keep the skin. That plain aim, repeated across serum, cream, mist and stick, is what the name promises. The same care, for all.
